Welcome to the special Grammy Award issue of Avatar Studio's
electronic newsletter called AVATAR TRACKSHEETS. This year, the
Grammy Awards will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York on
Sunday, February 23rd. Watch for various Grammy Events scheduled
throughout the City if you happen to be in town.
1. AVATAR STUDIOS CELEBRATES 21 GRAMMY NOMINATED RECORDINGS
When the 2003 Grammy nominations were announced recently, the staff
at New York's pre-eminent recording venue AVATAR STUDIOS was thrilled
to discover that 21 prospective winners had recorded all or part of
their potentially award winning albums at the facility. The 45th
Grammy Awards will take place in New York this year. Avatar salutes
the artists nominated and wishes them the best of luck at the Awards.
Among the Grammy nominated artists who have utilized the AVATAR state
of the art studios are: Sheryl Crow (Best Female Pop Vocal
Performance, Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, Best Rock Album),
Natalie Cole & Diana Krall (Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals),
Elvis Costello (Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock
Album), Foxy Brown (Best Female Rap Solo Performance), The John
Scofield Band (Best Contemporary Jazz Album), and Herbie Hancock
(Best Jazz Instrumental Solo). For a complete list of AVATAR-related

2. CREATIVE COMMUNITY NEWS
=> Avatar Adds Jerry Barnes to the Mix
Avatar Studios welcomes Jerry Barnes, renowned bassist, songwriter,
and engineer / producer. Jerry will work on various projects in his
new Studio H located on the 3rd floor, and utilize Avatar's recording
rooms as well as its professional staff support as necessary. As a
musician, Jerry Barnes has worked with recording artists such as
Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Carly Simon, Bette Midler and Vanessa
Williams. Jerry also is a prolific songwriter. He often
collaborates with his sister, Katreese, a singer, songwriter and
piano player who's been in the SNL band for the last year and
recently toured with Sting. Together, they have written songs for
artists such as Chaka Khan, Roberta Flack, Tony Terry, Deodato, Gwen
Guthrie and Chuck Mangione. They also have produced albums for some
of these artists as well.
3. "HALL OF FAME" PHOTO
=> In this issue, we feature the photo of Tibetan Monks in Studio B.
The Tibetan Monks were on tour of the U.S. and happened to be in New
York. Someone in the session in Studio B knew the coordinator of the
monks and had them come in to the studio. They showed up in full
monk attire and with their radongs. While they were in Studio B,
they blessed the room for us. Check out the photos at

4. SESSION NEWS
=> Producer Luke Ebbin and engineer Gary Tole were recently in
tracking for an upcoming release by new Arista act WAKEFIELD. Peter
Doris assisted.
=> Grammy winning engineer, Al Schmitt, recently came in to record a
new record by Japanese sensation MIWA YOSHIDA, singer of the
multi-Platinum group Dreams Come True. Jeff Shaw produced. Peter
Doris assisted.
=> Sony Music Japan / Village Records and producer Yasohachi "88"
Itoh were recently in recording a new disc by WILL BOULWARE,
featuring Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson, and Phoebe Snow. The project
was recorded in 5.1 Surround using the Sony DSD format. Engineer
David Baker was assisted by Peter Doris.
=> Octone / J Records artist MICHAEL TOLCHER recently tracked a new
release with producer David Schoner and engineer Chris Shaw. Anthony
Ruotolo assisted.
=> Producer Jim Beard recently recorded MIKE STERN's new album for
Escapade Records with engineer Phil Magnotti assisted by Aya Takemura.
=> Verve legend, SHIRLEY HORN recently was in mixing a new disc,
engineered by David Baker with Brian Montgomery assisting.
=> Grammy nominee engineer / producer Jay Newland (Norah Jones)
recently in Studio D mixing and tracking vocals with legendary
vocalist, ABBEY LINCOLN, for Verve France. Peter Doris assisted.
=> AARON NEVILLE visited to cut a record for Verve Records. Rob
Mounsey produced and Dave O'Donnell engineered the sessions to Pro
Tools. Aya Takemura assisted.
=> Def Jam artist K FOX was in recording strings and horns for the
upcoming release. Engineering was Niko Bolas with help from
assistant engineer Brian Montgomery.
=> Grammy Award winning producer Andrew Lippa was in producing music
for the upcoming release of LEGALLY BLONDE II for MGM Studios. Vince
Caro engineered the sessions assisted by Aya Takemura.
=> PATTY SCIALFA was in with Grammy winning engineer Trina Shoemaker
putting the finishing touches on her album. Ross Petersen assisted
the string sessions.
=> Telarc Records was in to record McCOY TYNER and MONTY ALEXANDER
TRIO using Sony's DSD format. Telarc's Jack Renner and Elaine
Martone engineered and produced respectively, with assistance from
Aya Takemura and Peter Doris.
=> JON BON JOVI visited his old haunt with producer Gregg Wattenberg.
Jon cut vocals and guitar for his next single off the new album with
Wattenberg. Ross Petersen assisted.
=> Atlantic Records' LINDA EDER recorded orchestra and big band for
an upcoming release produced by Jeremy Roberts. Engineering was
Frank Filipetti assisted by Brian Montgomery.
=> Avatar resident producers / writers Full Force Productions mixed
tracks for an upcoming LIL' KIM record for Atlantic. Josh Wilbur
engineered the mixes assisted by Brian Montgomery.
=> ECM Records' DAVE HOLLAND recorded his Big Band. Engineering was
James Farber assisted by Brian Montgomery.
=> Producer Jeff Bova produced a track for the upcoming BLONDIE
album. Jeff was in with engineer Paul Logus and assistant Ross
Petersen to cut vocals and guitars.
5. QUICK MENTIONS
=> Showcases
Avatar has done a few showcases for bands as well as record labels.
The atmosphere of the studio and support service that we offer, make
Avatar the ideal place to showcase bands. Labels that recently had

7. ABOUT AVATAR STUDIOS
Avatar Studios, formerly known as Power Station, is a
33,000-square-foot multi-room facility on Manhattan's west side
dedicated to providing the highest possible quality audio recording
services to the recording industry. The studio houses four premier
recording rooms containing Neve 8068, two SSL 9000Js and a Neve VRP.
The four rooms are equipped with four ISDN lines per room and a
remote recording session can be set up at a moment's notice. AVATAR
also has a Pro Tools editing suite available.
