Welcome to our Summer issue of Avatar Studio's electronic newsletter,
AVATAR TRACKSHEETS. We're not sure if it is spring, summer, or even
fall with this weather that we are having in New York. Regardless, the
recording sessions march on. On one occasion, we had John Mayer and
Jon Mayer (not to mention Elvis Costello) in our studios at the same
time. What are the chances of that happening?
1. AVATAR STUDIOS NOMINATED FOR TWO 2003 TEC AWARDS
Avatar Studios has just been nominated for two 2003 TEC Awards for
Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Record Production / Album
category as the studio where Sheryl Crow's C'mon C'mon (engineered by
Trina Shoemaker) AND Diana Krall's Live in Paris (engineered by Al
Schmitt) were recorded. Winners will be announced at the 19th Annual
TEC Awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the New
York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
2. NEW GEAR / INSTRUMENTS
=> Avatar Acquires New Pro Tools HD3 System and Other New Gear
Avatar recently acquired another Pro Tools HD3 system with 40 inputs
and 56 outputs at 192kHz. It has dual LCD monitors, and is loaded with
plug-ins. Other recent additions include Cole 4038 microphones, a
couple of Distressors, and much more.
3. CREATIVE COMMUNITY NEWS
=> Roy Hendrickson Update
Roy Hendrickson has been busy recording and mixing a record for MALCOLM
GRIFFITH QUARTET. He is currently mixing an upcoming release by UK
jazz vocalist, IAN SHAW. Roy is available for your engineering /

=> Gregg Wattenberg Update
Gregg is writing with FIVE FOR FIGHTING on their next release. He is
also mixing a new single for STAGE. His latest endeavor is writing for
AVRIL LAVIGNE.
4. "HALL OF FAME" PHOTO
=> In this issue, we feature the photo of Grammy Award winner, JOHN
MAYER. He booked into Studio A, recording his upcoming Columbia
Records album with producer / engineer Jack Joseph Puig. John Mayer
wanted a "New York" sound for his next album and Jack decided that
Avatar Studios was "the first and only choice" for recording in New
York. They spent more than 5 weeks at Avatar. Avatar staff assistant
engineer Ross Petersen worked on the project. Check out the photos at

5. SESSION NEWS
=> Engineer Elliot Scheiner was in with producer Rob Mounsey tracking
for new Universal / Verve artist SISSEL. Brian Montgomery assisted.
=> Engineer / producer Kevin Killen completed mixing of ELVIS
COSTELLO's latest record tracked entirely in Studio A. Peter Doris
assisted.
=> Producer / arranger Bob Belden was in with jazz great JAMES MOODY
tracking his new Savoy Jazz record. Scott Noll engineered the sessions
with help from Aya Takemura.
=> Engineer Chris Shaw and producer Butch Walker (Avril Lavigne) was in
doing mixes for Jive artist BOWLING FOR SOUP. Ross Petersen assisted.
=> Producer Tommy Krasker was in recording the cast of the hit musical
"ZANNA, DON'T." Tom Lazarus engineered the sessions using Pyramix,
along with operator Mark Stedman and assistant Peter Doris.
=> Engineer James Farber was in recording sax great JOE LOVANO direct
to 2 track for a Blue Note release. Aya Takemura assisted.
=> Producer Josh Deutch was in with engineer Vaughn Merrick tracking
RICK FANTE's Virgin Records release.
=> Producer / pioneer DJ Premier was in mixing tracks for Arista artist
CEE-LO. Eddie Sancho engineered the mixes with assistance from Anthony
Ruotolo. DJ Premier also mixed the latest album by his group GANG
STARR (Virgin).
=> Telarc Records and producer Russ Titelman completed a new JOHN
PIZZARELLI recording with Telarc engineer Robert Friedrich. The
sessions were recorded in Sony's DSD format live to two tracks and
simultaneously to 5.1 surround. Brian Montgomery assisted on the
project.
=> ME'SHELL NDEGEOCELLO produced a project which included Joshua Redman
and Jack DeJohnette. Bob Power engineered with assistance from Brian
Montgomery.
=> Producer / composer Stephen Endelman and producer Peter Asher was in
recording the music for a COLE PORTER TRIBUTE FILM. Gary Chester
engineered assisted by Ross Petersen.
=> Bass legend DAVE HOLLAND was in with engineer James Farber mixing a
live record, assisted by Aya Takemura. Holland's latest big band
record, done at Avatar, won a Grammy earlier this year.
=> Columbia Jazz VP/ producer Yves Beauvais was in with JAMES CARTER
tracking for a new record. Danny Kopelson engineered assisted by Aya
Takemura.
=> CASSANDRA WILSON finished mixing her latest record with producer
Fabrizio Sotti and engineer Eric Butler. All the tracks were recorded
in Studio C to Pro Tools HD.
